Bottle Feeding

Not every mother is able or willing to breastfeed their baby. Formula is a fine alternative. It is for sale in most supermarkets, and your nurse will be able to assist you to prepare the formula. She can also give you some advice about different bottles and nipples, and about how much milk your baby needs.

After the first week, here’s a rough guide for how much formula your baby needs: 150 ml x the baby’s weight in kilograms, divided by the number of feedings per 24 hours. So after the first week, a 3kg baby will get 150 x 3 = 450 ml per 24 hours, divided by 8 feedings is 56 ml per feeding. Does the baby get 6 feedings per 24 hours? Divide 450 by 6: 75 ml per bottle.

It is very important to stick to the prescribed amounts, for there is a link between too much formula in infancy and obesity in later life.
